When he got home that evening, he found Jasmine there, delivering a meal for them, and taking away his and Jacob's bed sheets and towels.

“I'll bring these back tomorrow ….” she started to say, until she saw the look on Tom's face.

“One in and one out,” he said flippantly. “Oh God, I did not mean that! I'm sorry. She's gone, Jasmine, and the baby was delivered, and I have no idea how I am going to cope. How am I going to get through this without her?” His emotions broke again.

Jasmine dropped the bedding where she stood and reached out for Tom. She put her arms around him and he cried on her shoulder. She patted his back and held him. Jacob clung to Tom’s leg.

“Mummy, baby,” he said sadly.

Jasmine crouched down to Jacob. “I’m so sorry Jacob. Come and have a cuddle.” She put her arms around him and held him tightly, rocking him slightly. He pulled away.

“I hungry,” he said.

“Poor Jacob!” Tom exclaimed. “he’s not eaten for hours!”

Jasmine, who was still choking back tears, took charge. Pulling some crackers from a packet, she set Jacob and Jack up with some cheese and carrot sticks and a glass of water each. Then she poured Tom a whisky from a dusty bottle she found in a cupboard. She put dinner in the oven, poured herself a glass of water, and sat with Tom until he had gained control of himself. He noticed that Jasmine was wearing a very interesting outfit of torn blue jeans with a long lace and velvet dress over the top, along with stained sheepskin boots.

“You look lovely today, Jasmine,” he said solemnly.

“Do you think so? Oath mate, I never can do the mix-and-match like Lucy does, but I thought this was quite fetching.”

As she realised what she had said, she saw the pain in Tom’s eyes.

“I am so, so sorry, Tom. I can't imagine what it is like for you. But I can be here whenever you need.”

“What about your new man?” he asked.

“Huh,” she barked. “He turned out to be as bad as the other one. I sure know how to pick them. What’s going to happen now?” she asked.

“I have absolutely no idea,” Tom said. “I suppose I bring the baby home in a day or two, when they think she is stable.”

“Have you chosen a name for the baby? Makes it easier to think of her as a person. Better than keep calling her ‘Baby’.”

“There's a folder on the dresser. Lucy had all her notes in there. Just like she did for Jacob. Not that it helped much.”

Jasmine smiled. “No, the first one is like nothing we can imagine.”

She got up to find the folder. It was very neat and organised and she easily found the sections with suggested names. She pulled it out and handed it to Tom. He shook his head and handed it back to her.

“You choose,” he said.

Jasmine looked at the list thoughtfully, then said, “Amy Rose?”

Tom nodded, his head resting back on the sofa.
